Is All Dentistry Created Equal?

May 19, 2011  |   Posted by :   |   Informative   |   0 Comment»

Is all dentistry created equal? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Most dentists are forced to accept patients on PPO and HMO networks in order to stay busy. By accepting these plans, we agree to the fees that the insurance companies set. They are insensitive to the costs of keeping a business afloat, such as the consistently increasing expenses from dental supplies, labs (cost of gold), salaries, and rent. So, in order to stay profitable, some dentists are using labs in China where restorations sometimes come back containing lead. Also, many general dentists are placing their own implants instead of using a surgical specialist. There is also a flood of new implant companies offering their implants at 75% less than the cost of implants from well-established companies.

In addition, there are general dentists who are now doing root canals and extractions instead of referring them to the appropriate specialist. This can sometimes lead to failure which may include the loss of a tooth, permanent numbness, or sinus problems. Top quality implants done by an experienced oral surgeon or periodontist, and restored by a “quality-oriented” general dentist with years of experience can last your entire lifetime! However, an unproven implant, even if restored properly could fail and cause bone loss and possibly infection, leading to the inability to place a new implant. If you are contemplating doing major dental work, PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELF and ask as many questions as you can.

For example:

  • How many cases like this have you done?
  • How many failures over a specific time frame?
  • What brand of implant are you using? (Straumann and Nobel Biocare are the leaders in the industry
  • Who is placing the implant?
  • How much experience do they have?

Be suspicious of any dentist who won’t answer these questions. The old adage, “you get what you pay for” absolutely applies in dentistry. When comparing costs, always compare apples to apples.

At Premier Dental Associates, Inc. we are a full-service dental office, with specialists in oral surgery, endodontics, and periodontics. Dr. Bruce Weisbrot will diagnose the need for an implant and take impressions and order the implant from Straumann. We then have our oral surgeon Dr. Jose Garri place the implant. When this is done, Dr. Weisbrot will do the restoration.

In addition to implants, we offer Invisalign, Botox, sedation, implants, cosmetic dentistry, and more. We have recently installed free Wi-fi throughout the office for our patients. Please call our office at 954/392-1635 for any and all of your dental needs. We are conveniently located next to Pembroke Lakes Mall on the lake.
